| As in other areas of the province of Málaga, the history
of the AXARQUIA goes up to the paleolitic, as attested by the vestiges
found in various caves in the mountains of the Sierras of Alhama,
Tejeda y Almijara. |
|
|
Phenicians, Cartaginois, Greecs and Romans left their prints
on this area. In Trayamar, close to Algarrobo you find the vestiges
of a Paleo-punic necropolis, with a VIII century b.c. old tomb,
it is one of the most significant phenicians discover of Western
Europe. The many examples of Muslim art are the result of the Arab
domination period, there are for examples the minarets of Arenas,
Salares y Archez, and the "Torres Almenaras", watch-towers
that we can find along the coast. |
| The Christians monarchs
reconquered the AXARQUÍA in 1487 with the assistance
of the rich nobility of Castilla. Vélez-Málaga,
passed then to the kingdom of Granada, was one of the first
taken cities... Each village of the AXARQUÍA, as
small as it is, has its own celebrations, religious, laic
or simply traditional. They come from their History, from
the sea, from the agriculture, since the oldest times... |

|
|
In summer, take place the festivals
of Flamenco, folk dances and the "verdiales", particularly
popular in Velez-Málaga. |
|
The AXARQUÍA is filled up of traditions
based on the daily tasks and events, like the culture of its vines,
making of its wines,
 |
its varied
gastronomy, its religious festivals and celebrations, its
handicrafts, its "verdiales", its dances and folk
songs. |
 |
|
| The AXARQUÍA is rural and unequal:
The Sierras of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara form the límites
with the Province of Granada.
 |
The varied landscape of the AXARQUÍA extends
from the high tops from the mountains until the quiet
beaches. Nature was generous when it created this
marvellous area. One of the most beautiful landscape
is the "sierra del Alcázar", natural
parks near Alcaucín, as well as the zone of
the Viñuela lake. |
The climate of the AXARQUIA is mainly mediteranean
with soft winters and hots summers. In North, the
area is protected from the cold winds by the sierras
of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara.
Its subtropical latitude is one of the principal
reasons for which the area enjoys 3.000 hours of sun
per year . |
|
The Eastern part of the AXARQUÍA has 30 kilometers
of beaches which extend from "Rincón de la Vicroria"
until the limits with the Province of Granada.
|
|
Torre del Mar, Torrox and
Nerja have broad sand beaches.
In the neighbourhoods of Nerja and Maro the shore
forms small splits... The sea water is very clear
and the beaches have an easy accesses. |
On every one of those beaches, you can sail, make windsurf,
fish or deep-sea diving and any kind of beaches games.
There are cafeterias, restaurants and bars throughout
the "paseo maritimo" of Torre del Mar, Torrox
and Nerja |
